Weekend Waiver Wire

Welcome fantasy managers to another edition of the Weekend Waiver Wire. Let’s take a look at what goaltenders may be available as a streaming option this weekend to help you take down your fantasy matchups. Let’s get to it!

Jacob Fowler - Montreal Canadiens (13% Yahoo / 49% Fantrax) [@NSH - Sat / @CAR - Sun]

Jakub Dobes - Montreal Canadiens (34% Yahoo / 62% Fantrax)

Dobes has been excellent over his last five games as the Canadiens rookie is sporting an 3-2 record accompanied by a 2.00 goals against and .931 save percentage including a 80.0% quality start rate. Meanwhile, Montreal’s goaltender of the future Jacob Fowler is rocking a 5-4-1 record in the bigs with a 2.53 goals against and .905 save percentage including a 50.0% quality start rate over his last ten games played. Fantasy managers should continue to monitor which netminder is tabbed with the start against Nashville which would be the preferred matchup as opposed to the defensively conscious Carolina Hurricanes.

Elvis Merzlikins - Columbus Blue Jackets (10% Yahoo / 29% Fantrax) [S.J. - Sat / BOS - Sun]

Merzlikins has been rather solid of late with the Blue Jackets making a serious run at the postseason after languishing at the bottom of the Eastern Conference standings up until mid-January. Merzlikins has fashioned a 6-1-2 record over his last ten starts with a respectable 2.50 goals against and .891 save percentage including a 40.0% quality start rate. I would expect “Elvis” to get the start against the San Jose Sharks on Saturday which bodes well for the Latvian native as the Sharks currently rank 31st defensively at 3.59 goals against per game played while the Blue Jackets rank 13th overall offensively at 3.17 goals for per game played. San Jose has been an exciting team to watch this year with their quick strike offense, however, since the hiring of Rick Bowness behind the bench the Blue Jackets rank number one is both goals against as well goals against per game played.

Casey DeSmith - Dallas Stars (22% Yahoo / 34% Fantrax) [@PIT - Sat / @PHI - Sun]

DeSmith is quietly having another solid campaign for the Dallas Stars with a 14-7-5 record accompanied by a 2.40 goals against and .907 save percentage including a 55.6% quality start rate. The fact he has dropped his last three games is not lost on anyone, however, Dallas is just too damn good to not find themselves back in the win column in short order. My guess would be that the Stars backup will get the start against the Flyers on Sunday, a game in which I believe the Stars will just be too much to handle offensively with 3.37 goals per game (8th overall) as opposed to the Flyers 2.79 goals per game (25th overall). All that being said, I think DeSmith is a sneaky good pickup this weekend.

Alex Lyon - Buffalo Sabres (53% Yahoo / 61% Fantrax) [DET - Fri / SEA - Sat]

I focus mainly on goaltenders under the fifty percent threshold in this weekly article, however with Alex Lyon’s ownership hovering around the 55% mark, I”ll make an exception. Lyon has been on just as much of a heater as the Sabers themselves having fashioned a 17-2-1 record accompanied by a 2.27 goals against and .920 save percentage including a 75.0% quality start rate over his last 20 games played. Buffalo is an absolute wagon at the moment and their netminders have been a huge part of that success. Whether it be Alex Lyon or Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen, either goaltender is a must start, no question about it.

Freddy Andersen - Carolina Hurricanes (33% Yahoo / 41% Fantrax) [N.J. - Sat / MTL - Sun]

Andersen has been on a nice little stretch over the past 8 games as the big Dane is sporting a 6-2 record along with a 2.86 goals against and .872 save percentage including a 37.5% quality start rate. Now, you may want to be a bit more cautious if your league counts goals against and save percentage, however, if it is weighted more towards wins Andersen could be a solid addition behind such a structured system.

There you have it folks, some streaming options to consider for your fantasy squad heading into the weekend.
