Weekend Waiver Wire

Welcome fantasy managers to another edition of the Weekend Waiver Wire. Let’s take a look at what goaltenders may be available as a streaming option this weekend to help you take down your fantasy matchups. Let’s get to it!

Alex Lyon - Buffalo Sabres (47% Yahoo / 56% Fantrax) [NSH - Sat / T.B. - Sun]

The Buffalo Sabres have been on an absolute tear over the past three months and a big part of that success is due to the consistent play of goaltender Alex Lyon. Lyon has enjoyed what is basically a timeshare between himself and Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen with some excellent results as the 33-year old has fashioned an 8-2-0 record accompanied by a 2.10 goals against and .932 save percentage including one shutout, a 60.0% quality start rate and 12.93 goals saved above expected over his last ten games played. Quite frankly, if Lyon is available off the wire fantasy managers should be tripping over themselves to add the Buffalo netminder to their rosters.

Joonas Korpisalo - Boston Bruins (5% Yahoo / 14% Fantrax) [WSH - Sat / @PIT - Sun]

Joonas Korpisalo is an intriguing option this weekend as the Boston Bruins backup netminder continues to improve his play as the season has gone on. Over his last ten games played, Korpisalo is sporting a 5-2-2 record accompanied by a respectable 2.77 goals against and .907 save percentage including one shutout, a 60% quality start rate and 6.77 goals saved above expected. Boston has played quite well of late with a 5-2-3 record in their last 10 games and if they can continue their current level of play, Korpisalo could be a sneaky good play while offering some decent peripherals in the process.

Frederik Andersen - Carolina Hurricanes (29% Yahoo / 39% Fantrax) [@EDM - Fri / @CGY - Sat]

Frederik Andersen has had a challenging campaign up to this point as the Danish netminder is currently sporting an 8-11-5 record accompanied by a horrible 3.16 goals against and .874 save percentage including a 25.0% quality start rate and -2.69 goals saved above expected. The kind of numbers that fantasy managers will shy away from, however, over his last five games Andersen has put together a 2-1-2 record along with a tidy 2.37 goals against and .912 save percentage including a 60.0% quality start rate and 2.30 goals saved above expected. It’s a calculated risk but one that may pay huge dividends.

Jake Allen - New Jersey Devils (20% Yahoo / 42% Fantrax) [NYR - Sat / DET - Sun]

In what has been an extremely trying season for the New Jersey Devils, Jake Allen has brought some stabilizing and consistent play to a team that has been in flux for most of the season. The 35-year old has a 12-15-1 record accompanied by a very respectable 2.61 goals against and .907 save percentage including a 55.2% quality start rate and 13.88 goals saved above expected. Again, the win totals may be sparse, however, Allen has been even better over his past five games with a 1-4 record along with a 2.47 goals against and .904 save percentage that includes a 60.0% quality start rate and .93 goals saved above expected. It’s not my first choice but if you find yourself in a bit of a bind, there is some value there.

Arturs Silovs - Pittsburgh Penguins (20% Yahoo / 48% Fantrax) [PHI - Sat / BOS - Sun]

One of my favorite targets this weekend is Arturs Silovs as the 24-year old is on an absolute heater of late and has rewarded many a fantasy manager employing the Zero G draft strategy. Over his last ten games played the Latvian native has fashioned a 6-2-2 record accompanied by phenomenal 1.99 goals against and .925 save percentage including an 80.0% quality start rate and 8.07 goals saved above expected. When you combine that with the Penguins sound defensive game (2.78 GA/GP - 6th overall) it’s a recipe for success. If you add in the fact that Pittsburgh employs the league's 7th ranked offense and will be matched up against Philadelphia and Boston who own the 18th and 19th ranked defenses respectively, you have an excellent spot in which Silovs and the Penguins can do some damage regardless of the Sidney Crosby injury. An immediate add in my eyes.

Alex Nedeljkovic - San Jose Sharks (7% Yahoo / 20% Fantrax) [STL - Fri / NYI - Sat]

Another sneaky good add this weekend would be the Sharks backup netminder Alex Nedeljkovic who has given his team some quality goaltending behind number one Yaroslav Askarov. Nedeljkovic has really stepped things up of late with a 6-2 record in his last 10 games played (two no decisions) with a very respectable 2.51 goals against and .907 save percentage including a 60.0% quality start rate and a 5.17 goals saved above expected. A start against the lowly St. Louis Blues would certainly be the preferred landing spot for fantasy managers, however, with the way that “Ned” has been performing of late I would suggest adding him regardless as a streamer this weekend.

Jonas Johansson - Tampa Bay Lightning (3% Yahoo / 12% Fantrax0 [@TOR - Sat / @BUF - Sun]

When it comes to Johansson, one should tread carefully. The 6’5” 220lbs goaltenders is enjoying a middling season so far with a 10-8-1 record to go along with a 2.98 goals against and .890 save percentage that includes a 47.6% quality start rate and a 3.89 goals saved above expected. The issue is in his play the last ten games stretch where Johansson has fashioned a decent 5-3-1 record, however, if your league counts peripheral stats you may want to fade the Lightning’s backup netminder as in those same ten games he is sporting a bloated 3.30 goals against and .879 save percentage. All that being said, if your goaltending stats are heavily weighted towards wins then you have yourself yet another option for a potential add this weekend.

Nikita Tolopilo - Vancouver Canucks (1% Yahoo / 11% Fantrax) [@CHI - Fri / @WPG - Sat]

Tolopilo is beginning to make a little noise in fantasy circles as the 6’6” 229lbs Belarussian has played extremely well for a Vancouver Canucks team that is embarking on a complete rebuild. Tolopilo is sporting a 1-2-2 record with a solid 2.65 goals against and .919 save percentage including a 40.0% quality start rate and a 6.11 goals saved above expected. Sure, wins will most certainly be hard to come by, however, for those in deeper dynasty league Tolopilo is at the very least someone we will surely be keeping tabs on. All that being said, with the current state of the Canucks franchise, one would be best served to fade Vancouver’s goaltending for the remainder of the campaign.

Jakub Dobes - Monreal Canadiens (30% Yahoo / 61% Fantrax) [@ANA - Fri / @L.A. - Sat]

Aside from his latest outing (a 7-5 to the San Jose Sharks), Jakub Dobes has been putting together a rather impressive rookie campaign. The 24-year old Czech netminder has fashioned a solid 19-6-4 record accompanied by a 3.03 goals against and ,889 save percentage including a 51.7% quality start rate and a 5.60 goals saved above expected. Dobes’ win / loss record is even better over his last 10 games played going 7-1-2 with a 3.25 goals against and .882 save percentage. The 6’4” 215lbs Dobes has been aided by Montreal’s potent offense to be sure and fantasy managers will want to see improved peripheral numbers moving forward. However, a slated matchup against Los Angeles on Saturday presents a great opportunity to add Dobes to your roster with the Kings and their lack of offence (ranked 29th overall - 2.52 GF/GP) as the opponent.

There you have it folks, some streaming options to consider for your fantasy squad heading into the weekend.
