Weekend Waiver Wire

Welcome fantasy managers to another edition of the Weekend Waiver Wire. Another week has come and gone, however, there is a plethora of activity off the waiver wire to start the season with numerous options at the goaltending position.

Let’s get to it!

Trent Miner - Colorado Avalanche (0% owner on Yahoo / 6% owned on Fantrax)

A potential matchup against the Boston Bruins on Saturday afternoon could be a nice landing spot for current Colorado Avalanche backup Trent Miner to make his first start of the season. The Bruins have struggled of late, having lost five straight while giving up over four goals against per game. Conversely, the Avalanche’s defensive game has been on point as the team is currently holding a share of the league lead in goals against per game played (GA/GP) at 1.86.

Miner may not have much experience in the NHL (only two games to this point), however, this seems to me like an opportunity for most fantasy managers out there. A league that is weighted more towards wins will be more beneficial in this situation but with the way the Avs have been playing defensively Miner could provide some solid peripherals as well.

Casey DeSmith - Dallas Stars (4% owned on Yahoo / 14% Fantrax)

The Dallas Stars have not had the start to the season they had hoped as the team owns a rather pedestrian 3-3-0 record all while struggling to find their defensive game. That being said, it’s the Dallas Stars we are talking about here and one would have to think that it’s only a matter of time before this club gets on a serious roll. Dallas will take on the Nashville Predators on Sunday and you have to think that DeSmith would get the second game of a back-to-back with Jake Oettinger getting the call against the Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday.

I really like this spot for DeSmith as the Predators continue to be a bit of a mess both offensively and defensively to begin their 2025-2026 season. Additionally, Nashville will also be playing the second half of a back-to-back having played the night before against the Los Angeles Kings. If he’a available, I’d snipe him.

Calvin Pickard - Edmonton Oilers (16% owned on Yahoo / 35% owned on Fantrax)

The Edmonton Oilers will look to get on track this weekend with a back-to-back set against the Seattle Kraken (Saturday) and the Vancouver Canucks (Sunday). I would expect Stuart Skinner to get the start against the Kraken, giving way to Pickard for the second half against a Vancouver Canucks team that is still trying to establish an identity under new coach Adam Foote.

We all know that the Oilers offence will eventually pop with two of the games thoroughbreds in McDavid and Draisaitl leading the charge. We kind of expected this from the Canucks, they are not a bottom dweller by any stretch but this is definitely a team in transition. I like Pickard to win out with some decent peripherals to boot.

Charlie Lindgren - Washington Capitals (18% owned on Yahoo / 38% owned on Fantrax)

A potential matchup this weekend against the league's worst defensive team in the Ottawa Senators would be a phenomenal play to insert Lindgren into your lineup. Already without the services of the captain and emotional leader Brady Tkachuk, the Sens are really fighting it in their own end to begin the campaign with a league worst 33 goals against.

Combine that with the fact that the Washington Capitals have given up a league low 13 goals against while employing a suffocating style of play defensively and one would think this is a perfect opportunity to add Lindgren to the fold to take down your fantasy matchup this week!

There you have it folks, a few waiver wire options to consider for your fantasy squad heading into the weekend.
