Weekend Waiver Wire

Welcome fantasy managers to another edition of the Weekend Waiver Wire. It is time once again to take a look at what goaltenders may be available as a streaming option this weekend to help you take down your fantasy matchups.

Devin Cooley - Calgary Flames (4% owned on Yahoo / 11% owned on Fantrax)

It has been a nightmare this year for the Calgary Flames as the team is currently in the league’s basement at the quarter mark. However, backup goaltender Devin Cooley is playing extremely well despite the win-loss record as the 28-year old is sporting a 1-2-1 record with a phenomenal 1.80 goals against and .935 save percentage (albeit in a small sample size). One would expect the team to start Dustin Wolf against the Dallas Stars in the first half of a back-to-back on Saturday, leaving Cooley to face the Vancouver Canucks on Sunday which should be a much more winnable game. It’s a bit of a gamble to be sure, that said, it could pay off handsomely.

David Rittich - New York Islanders (4% owned on Yahoo / 10% owned on Fantrax)

The New York Islanders have been a bit of a feel good story to begin the campaign. The club is in the midst of a solid run having gone 7-2-1 in their last ten games, even more impressive is the team's 5-1 record on its current seven game road trip. Goaltending has been a major reason for the Islanders recent surge with both Ilya Sorokin as well as backup David Rittich playing at a level that gives this team a chance almost every night, regardless of their peripheral numbers to date this year. Rittich has had his ups and downs to be sure but when he’s on his game he can offer some pretty decent value. Over his last five games he owns a 3-2 record with porous 3.40 goals against and .874 save percentage, however, in those three wins he’s put up a very solid 2.00 goals against and .920 save percentage. A matchup against the struggling St-Louis Blues on Saturday would seem likely, with Sorokin taking on the Seattle Kraken in the second half of the teams back-to-back on Sunday. The way the Islanders have been playing of late makes this a viable option going into the weekend.

Alex Nedeljkovic - San Jose Sharks (4% owned on Yahoo / 18% owned on Fantrax)

The San Jose Sharks have been one of the most exciting teams to watch this year as their youth and exuberance has been on full display throughout the first quarter of the campaign. The results have been wildly inconsistent, however, that is what we expected out of this group of youngsters as they continue to grow and develop. All that being said, the team's goaltending has been one of their strengths to date as backup Alex Nedeljkovic has stepped up in his limited role with a 3-3-2 record accompanied by a very respectable 2.97 goals against and .902 save percentage. Due to the team in front of him Nedeljkovic would be a bit of a gamble seeing as the Sharks welcome in the Ottawa Senators on Saturday with the second half of their weekend back-to-back against the Boston Bruins on Sunday. My advice, add only as a last resort.

Philipp Grubauer - Seattle Kraken (4% owned on Yahoo / 13% owned on Fantrax)

The Seattle Kraken are playing some sound defensive hockey to begin the year which should come as a surprise to no one with first year coach Lane Lambert taking over behind the teams bench. It may not be the most exciting brand of hockey out there, however, it comes with a huge benefit to the club's goaltending. Kraken backup Philipp Grubauer is making the most of his opportunities as the German netminder has fashioned an impressive 3-0-1 record with a 2.21 goals against and .904 save percentage. A back-to-back this weekend against the Pittsburgh Penguins and New York Islanders will be no easy task yet there could be some value here if he draws the start in New York. It would not be my first choice but one could do worse than Grubauer in this spot.

Sergei Murashov - Pittsburgh Penguins (5% owned on Yahoo / 21% owned on Fantrax)

Arturs Silovs - Pittsburgh Penguins (35% owned on Yahoo / 62% owned on Fantrax)

The Pittsburgh Penguins are enjoying a phenomenal start to the year with what seems to be a rejuvenated lineup that has added some much needed youth over the course of the offseason. Two of those fresh faces happen to be in the Penguins crease with last year's Calder Cup winning goaltender Arturs Silovs signing in free agency and rookie netminder Sergei Murashov busting on the scene with a shutout in his NHL debut. Tristan Jarry being sidelined for roughly another week will give both Silovs and Murashov an opportunity to continue showcasing their skills. A back-to-back against the Minnesota Wild and Seattle Kraken at home on Friday and Saturday offer a great streaming option for fantasy managers with the way the club has played up to this point. Either netminder is a solid addition to any roster this coming weekend.

There you have it folks, some streaming options to consider for your fantasy squad heading into the weekend.
