Weekend Waiver Wire

Welcome fantasy managers to another edition of the Weekend Waiver Wire. Now that the Olympic break has come and gone, it’s time to return to our regularly scheduled programming. So, without further delay, let’s take a look at what goaltenders may be available as a streaming option this weekend to help you take down your fantasy matchups. Let’s get to it!

Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen - Buffalo Sabres (33% Yahoo / 58% Fantrax) [@FLA - Fri / @T.B. - Sat]

Luukkonen is an intriguing option this weekend especially if he draws the matchup against the Florida Panthers. Over his last ten games played UPL is sporting a 6-2-1 record accompanied by a 2.73 goals against and .912 save percentage including a 70% quality start rate and 7.66 goals save above expected, combining that with a Florida offence that is currently ranked 19th league-wide put Luukkonen in a great spot. That being said, all bets are off if he gets tabbed for the start on Saturday against the Tampa Bay Lightning with that group currently on a massive heater since the beginning of December. Monitor the situation closely.

Devin Cooley - Calgary Flames (7% Yahoo / 17% Fantrax) [@L.A. - Sat / @ANA - Sun]

It has been a true breakout season for the Calgary Flames backup as Cooley has fashioned an impressive 7-6-3 record to go along with a tidy 2.27 goals against and .921 save percentage including a 73/7% quality start rate and a 17.48 goals saved above expected. Cooley has been even better of late with a 2-2-1 record accompanied by a 2.20 goals against and .928 save percentage in his last five games before the Olympic break. In all likelihood, Cooley will get the start against the Kings which would be a great landing spot seeing as L.A. has had a difficult time creating offense as evidenced by their 29th ranked offense (2.56 GF/GP). Arvid Soderblom - Chicago Blackhawks (1% Yahoo / 8% Fantrax) [@COL - Sat / @UTA - Sun]

I’m not overly excited about adding any Chicago Blackhawks goaltender this weekend with a back-to-back against two very solid teams in the Colorado Avalanche and Utah Mammoth. Soderblom has clearly taken a step back this year with a brutal 5-9-2 record accompanied by an inflated 3.89 goals against and .873 save percentage which includes a 29.4% quality start rate and -6.03 goals saved above expected. The nail in the coffin for me is the Blackhawks stagnant offence (2.65 GF/GP - ranked 26th overall) going up against two teams ranked top five defensively (Colorado 2.41 GA/GP - 1st overall / Utah 2.78 GA/GP - 5th overall). Needless to say I’m not buying any stock when it comes to the Chicago Blackhawks goaltending this weekend.

David Rittich - N.Y. Islanders (10% Yahoo / 22% Fantrax) [@CLB - Sat / FLA - Sun]

My guess would be that Ilya Sorokin will draw the start against Columbus who are 9-1 in their last ten games played while David Rittich would face the Florida Panthers on Sunday. Rittich has had a rather solid year in goal for the Isles sporting a 12–8-3 record with a 2.57 goals against and .899 save percentage including a 60.9% quality start rate and 11.81 goals saved above expected. Rittich has struggled of late with a 1-3-1 record to go along with a 2.88 goals against and .868 save percentage, however, with the Panthers still dealing with an injury to captain Sasha Barkov as well as several players having participated at the Olympic Winter Games, I think the Islanders and by extension Rittich are in a good spot to come out on the winning end.

Arturs Silovs - Pittsburgh Penguins (15% Yahoo / 45% Fantrax) [@NYR - Sat / VGK - Sun]

The Penguins made a quiet yet valuable move last summer when they signed goaltender Arturs Silovs and all the 24-year old has done is repay them in spades. The Latvian native has fashioned a solid is unspectacular 11-7-8 record accompanied by a 2.89 goals against and .896 save percentage including a 57.7% quality start rate and a 1.21 goals saved above expected. A matchup against the Rangers on Saturday would be the preferred landing spot seeing as the Rangers have continued their free fall going 2-8 in their last ten games played. Be sure to check in with Goalie Post to see which netminder is tabbed for the start to begin the weekend.

Alex Nedeljkovic - San Jose Sharks (8% Yahoo / 20% Fantrax) [EDM - Sat / WPG - Sun]

Nedeljkovic has been on a nice little run of late going 3-1 in his last five starts with a phenomenal 2.02 goals against and .934 save percentage including a 80% quality start rate over that five game span. All that being said, I’m not overly confident in this weekend’s matchup for the Sharks as they welcome in the Edmonton Oilers and Winnipeg Jets. Mcdavid will have a rather large chip on his shoulder after losing the gold medal game whereas Connor Hellebuyck looks to have completely regained his elite form after the showing that he put on in the Olympic final. I’m fading Nedeljkovic this weekend and you should as well.

Joel Hofer - St.Louis Blues (18% Yahoo / 43% Fantrax0 [NJ - Sat / @MIN - Sun]

The Blues will be in tough this weekend with a back-to-back against a New Jersey Devils team that should have a pep in their step with superstar forward Jack Hughes returning to the team with some golden hardware. If that wasn’t enough of a challenge, St-Louis will travel to Minnesota to take on the high flying Wild on Sunday to close out the week. Hofer is currently sporting a 2-2-1 record in his last five games played with an inflated 3.53 goals against and putrid .858 save percentage including a 20% quality start rate. Frankly, I would be fading the Blues goaltending for the remainder of the season with the way things have gone this year for both team and player. The situation remains too volatile to invest in.

Charlie Lindgren - Washington Capitals (7% Yahoo / 23% Fantrax) [VGK - Fri / @MON - Sat]

It has been a challenging year for Lindgren as the 32-year old is still looking for that consistency in his game. Lindgren has put forth a 8-6-3 record accompanied by a 3.37 goals against and .884 save percentage including a 22.2% quality start rate and a -3.09 goals saved above expected. The Caps will have their hands full to be sure with two excellent teams in the Vegas Golden Knights and Montrel Canadiens as opponents. That in mind, I would look to more favorable options before committing to Lindgren and the Capitals simply due in part to the quality of competition in their upcoming back-to-back.
