Monday Morning Ramblings ft. Jarry, Wolf, Comrie and More

Welcome fantasy managers to another week of the Monday Morning Ramblings. With the first month of the season now in the books, we are starting to get a bit of a clearer picture of the league's goaltending landscape. The month-long sample size gives us much more to pull from but as we all know the goaltending position can turn on a dime. That being said, it’s time to dive in.

Let’s get to it!

Tristan Jarry along with the Pittsburgh Penguins have to be the league's biggest surprise up to this point in the season as both team and player are enjoying a phenomenal start to the 2025-2026 NHL season. You have to give a lot of credit to Tristan Jarry as many fantasy managers left him for dead and at most picked him up as a part of their Zero G strategy in their respective drafts.

Well, all Jarry has done is reward those who took a shot at rostering him by fashioning an incredible 5-1 record accompanied by a stellar 2.35 goals against and .923 save percentage with four wins and four quality starts (games with a SV% at or above league avg.) in his last four games played including a shoutout.

Not to be outdone is his running mate and off-season signing Arturs Silovs who took home the Calder Cup last spring with the Vancouver Canucks AHL affiliate in Abbotsford. Silovs has more than proven his worth by going 3-2-2 with a solid 2.66 goals against and .913 save percentage. What was seen at the beginning of the campaign as a major weakness for Pittsburgh is currently the team’s strength with both netminders giving them a chance to win on a nightly basis.

Jacob Markstrom and the New Jersey Devils came to the agreement of a new 2-year contract extension worth 6M AAV beginning with the 2026-2027 season. It has not been the start to the season that Markstrom had envisioned, however, the organization saw enough from the native of Gavle, Sweden to continue their partnership into the foreseeable future.

The Devils have had a great start to their year and along with experienced backup Jake Allen in tow this club feels it has the necessary pieces to contend for a league title. Since his acquisition from the Calgary Flames, Markstrom has gone a combined 29-18-6 with 4 shutouts while putting together a respectable 2.57 goals against with an .897 save percentage which I’m sure both organization as well as Markstrom himself would love to see improved upon. Expect solid win totals due to the quality of the team in front of him with some improved peripheral numbers to boot.

The Winnipeg Jets have arguably the best goaltender in the game in one Connor Hellebuyck but to say that backup Eric Comrie is simply an afterthought would not be doing his justice at all. Now in his third stint with the Jets franchise, the veteran backstop allows the team to rest its elite netminder with confidence as Comrie is having quite a start to the season with an undefeated record of 3-0 accompanied by a 2.33 goals against and .929 save percentage.

Those are numbers that could give Hellebuyck some extra rest this season in the hopes that he is fresher come playoff time and improves on some rather pedestrian numbers in the postseason. The bonus of course is that the Jets are still an elite outfit giving Comrie a great chance to post a win in any given start. This could be the year he finds himself with an additional 5-10 starts if he can maintain this level of play, a solid waiver pickup in any back-to-back situation.

Dustin Wolf has had a brutal start to his season as the Calgary Flames have languished at or near the bottom of the NHL standing throughout the month of October. The Flames find themselves mired in what is now a month-long slump as the organization decides its next steps in what is clearly a transitional period. Wolf has not played up to the lofty expectation placed on him after what was a phenomenal rookie season as the young American has struggled mightily putting together an ugly 3-8-1 record to go along with a 3.39 goals against and .885 save percentage.

If the Flames cannot turn this around in short order it could be a year in which the selloff begins which of course would lower Wolf’s value in spades. All that being said, his raw talent is undeniable and he does have the ability to steal games, however, it could become much more difficult if the team decides to lean into any kind of retool/rebuild.
