What The Allen Trade Means For Price & Binnington
Sep 2nd 2020, 5:21pm EDT
So much for Jake Allen pushing Jordan Binnington next year.
The St. Louis goaltender was dealt to the Montreal Canadiens on Wednesday, leaving Binnington as the unchallenged No. 1 for the Blues. Allen outplayed Binnington in both the regular season and playoffs, leading some to believe the Blues might bring Allen back in a tandem role for 2020-21. Instead it appears their faith in Binnington hasn't changed, or they may not be as confident in him as they once were but simply needed the cap space to re-sign Alex Pietrangelo. Either way, Allen is off to Montreal and a number of goaltenders for both organizations will be impacted.
Binnington
After a very questionable postseason, the 27-year old could now be a 60-plus game starter with Allen out of the picture. Binnington's incredible run in 2018-19 helped the Blues to the Stanley Cup, but seeing his save percentage drop significantly this season raised questions about the potential of last year being too small of a sample size.
Even if Binnington doesn't recapture his rookie form, the Blues are still going to be a strong team next year and he likely won't have anyone to push him, meaning he should still be one of the top goalies off the board in your draft. Expect him to be near the league lead in wins and saves, while hovering around a .915 save percentage.
Ville Husso
The Blues could always sign a veteran backup but all signs point to Husso getting this job. He's cheap, on a one-way deal, and general manager Doug Armstrong said he's going to get a chance to earn a spot in camp.
Husso is a hard guy to get a read on. Playing the last three seasons in the AHL with San Antonio, he's posted save percentages of .922, .871, and .909. That doesn't exactly scream consistency. Still, the Blues need cap space and it's hard to imagine them finding a more serviceable option for the $750,000 Husso is making. Unless Binnington goes down with a serious injury, don't expect Husso to have a ton of value next year.
Allen
Allen could have been an intriguing option next year as a tandem with Binnington, but sadly now his value has taken a hit. He probably won't start as many games in Montreal and the Canadiens, despite an encouraging postseason showing, are nowhere near as talented as St. Louis. Allen is likely going to see a lot of second games of back-to-backs and Montreal simply isn't good enough defensively to help his numbers.
The Canadiens finished in the bottom half of the league in goals against per game and in the middle of the pack when it came to shots against. Barring a significant splash on the blueline in free agency, expect Montreal's numbers to be similar in 2020-21.
Carey Price
Perhaps the most interesting impact of the Allen deal is what it will do for Price's value. On the surface it's easy to say it will be negative, as Montreal no doubt brought Allen in to lighten Price's workload. He was on pace for 65-plus games this year, so the Canadiens are probably hoping Allen can play well enough to only have Price start around 50 times. That\'s going to mean less action for Price and probably less wins, shutouts, and total saves.
On the other hand, a more rested Price could improve his save percentage and goals against numbers. The 33-year-old's stats have fallen off in the past three seasons and contributing to the decline is that he's simply overworked. Montreal will be banking on Allen to do what Keith Kinkaid couldn't in 2019-20, as the former New Jersey Devil was a disaster as Price's backup.
If Allen can handle a 60-40 split, Price could be in for a bounce back season.

Other Ramblings
Good morning fantasy hockey readers. @kingtuna4 here with the first installment of this year's goalie ramblings.
Jan 18th 2021, 10:19am EST
The season is only a few days old and it's certainly too early to overreact to a small sample size, but with only 56-games this year, expect coaches not to hesitate to make a change between the pipes if their starter is struggling. These might not be goalies you'll want to keep on your roster all season, but that doesn't mean you can't temporarily capitalize on some extra playing time for goalies sitting on the waiver wire.
Jan 16th 2021, 11:42pm EST
Many feel the Colorado Avalanche have all the pieces in place to make a run at the Stanley Cup, but they could use an upgrade in goal. In actuality, Colorado's netminders, although somewhat inexperienced, were a major strength for the team last season.
Nov 12th 2020, 2:12pm EST
The Toronto Maple Leafs finally landed a capable backup goalie in a trade last season, but the pandemic stopped the league before we could really see what Jack Campbell was capable of. Campbell played in just six games for the Leafs before the shutdown, though a .
Nov 2nd 2020, 1:01pm EST
The Seattle Kraken still have another year to wait before they join the NHL, but the rest of the league needs to start thinking about who they will protect in the expansion draft. Other than the Vegas Golden Knights, who will be exempt from the draft because of their recent entry into the league, every team will have to expose players for the Kraken to build their initial squad with.
Oct 26th 2020, 12:59pm EDT
Remember when you could draft someone like Martin Brodeur and just pencil him in for 70 starts? It was certainly a simpler time for fantasy hockey, although those days don't appear to be returning anytime soon. Sure, you still get the odd goalie that's good for 60 games or so, but more and more teams are now running with a tandem duo between the pipes.
Oct 19th 2020, 9:09am EDT
The goalie carousel has finally stopped spinning and a number of netminders have found a new home for the 2020-21 campaign. Some goaltenders improved their value, while others are going to be trending in the wrong direction with their new teams.
Oct 12th 2020, 1:20pm EDT
If debuting new jerseys and letting Alex Trebek make their third overall pick wasn't exciting enough, the Ottawa Senators also made a big splash on day two of the NHL draft. Ottawa acquired goaltender Matt Murray from the Pittsburgh Penguins, filling a need between the pipes for a team that desperately required some stability in goal.
Oct 7th 2020, 2:51pm EDT
Henrik Lundqvist's time in the Big Apple has come to an end. After 15 seasons with the New York Rangers, the team bought out Lundqvist to save some cap space and make way for Igor Shesterkin and Alexandar Georgiev.
Sep 30th 2020, 12:27pm EDT
Connor Hellebuyck took home the Vezina Trophy this week as the league's top goaltender for 2019-20, but Andrei Vasilevskiy is leaving little doubt as to who the best in the world is during these playoffs. Even though Hellebuyck may have the hardware, Vasilevskiy is proving he should be the first goalie off your board in next year's fantasy drafts.
Sep 24th 2020, 1:08pm EDT
With the New York Islanders bowing out of the Stanley Cup playoffs after an impressive run, the team will no doubt look to make some changes to improve their chances at winning it all next year. While the majority of the tinkering will come at forward and with the defense corps, New York's netminders will also look different in 2020-21.
Sep 18th 2020, 3:26pm EDT
Anton Khudobin probably should have fallen apart by now, but instead he just seems to be getting stronger as these playoffs move along. Forced into action because of an injury to Ben Bishop, the Dallas Stars netminder has backstopped his squad to the conference finals and is now just two wins away from competing for the Stanley Cup.
Sep 11th 2020, 10:31am EDT
When most people hear the name Jim Carrey they think of Ace Ventura or The Truman Show, but there's another Jim Carey, with one R, that hockey fans may remember. Carey exploded onto the scene for the Washington Capitals in the mid-90s, playing 71 games in 1995-96 and capturing the Vezina Trophy.

Happy Monday y\'all! If you are still in your fantasy hockey playoffs, congrats and good luck the rest of the way! *** Taking a look at the upcoming week, the Buffalo Sabres has FIVE games! If you are looking for extra streaming options, they are your team to look at. They have two back-to-backs and with them out of the playoff hunt, look for them to spread the games out evenly.

Good morning all, and a happy Presidents Day to my friends to the south. Here in Ontario it is Family Day.
Feb 18th 2019, 1:36am EST
Happy Monday y\'all! We had a relatively quiet week on the goalie front, which isn\'t always a bad thing as we hit the stretch run. Let\'s dive right in.
Feb 11th 2019, 1:38am EST
Good morning everyone and a big welcome back to all the teams after their bye weeks. I am sure glad hockey is back and that we had a full slate of games this weekend.
Feb 4th 2019, 10:45am EST
Happy Monday y\'all! The biggest reason I don\'t like the All-Star Game is because it shortens the week of actual games. With some teams on their bye week as well, we only had a total number of 15 games to cover.
Jan 28th 2019, 1:51am EST
Good day fantasy hockey land. @KINGTUNA4 here with this week ramblings.
Jan 20th 2019, 11:59pm EST
Happy Monday y\'all! We are halfway through the 2018-19 season (where has it gone?!) and we\'ve had some big headlines in the goalie world. Smaller pads have led to more goal scoring, but the athletic goalies have risen to the top; think of some of the saves Andrei Vasilevskiy and John Gibson have made this season.
Jan 14th 2019, 1:51am EST
Good morning and Happy New Year! Hopefully all of you are sticking to your resolutions. @Kingtuna4 here with another goalie ramblings.
Jan 7th 2019, 10:18am EST

Good morning fantasy hockey land, @kingtuna4 here. This week I am going to take a look at a few starters that might be losing their job.
Nov 12th 2018, 9:02am EST
I know it\'s not May the 5th, but it is November 5th and we had some big goalies returning to action. Cory Schneider\'s first start came against Detroit and he stopped 27 of 30 shots in a 4-3 loss.
Nov 5th 2018, 2:06am EST
So this week I thought I would try something different with the goalie ramblings. I'm trying to engage with the readers a little more to create some fun within goalie post.
Oct 29th 2018, 10:11am EDT
Happy Monday y'all! Jaro Halak has started two straight for the Bs but he hasn't looked great. While Tuukka RaskThas not given them a great shot to win when he starts, like I said a couple of weeks ago, Rask always starts the season slow so keep chipping away at owners in your leagues that are looking to get rid of him.
Oct 22nd 2018, 2:01am EDT
To almost quote Jay Z. Goals, goals, goals, goals, goals I do adore said no goalie ever! It's the start of the season and for most that means lots of goals.
Oct 15th 2018, 4:10pm EDT
Happy hockey season! Even though the Cup was awarded in June, it feels like hockey was gone for years. *** With the league officially starting last week, teams had to trim their rosters down to 23 skaters and there were some interesting players placed on waivers.

Hi everyone! My name is Lucas Main (Twitter @LAM1926) and along with my buddy Aaron, we\'ll be bringing the ramblings every Monday. Hope you enjoy! With training camps a little over a week in, there are some fierce competitions going on for the back up spot on a number of teams and some squads are set in stone (barring injuries) so I\'ll touch on the teams that have question marks: BUF: Hutton, Ullmark, Wedgewood Hutton is the number one to start the season because of the three year contract GM Botterill handed him this past summer, but after that it comes down to Linus Ullmark and Scott Wedgewood.

An Early Look at Goalie Performances in the West By Kevin Wickersham We\'re a little over a month into the campaign so let\'s take a look at how the West\'s goalies have performed thus far. Much is prone to change, but from a fantasy perspective (obviously dependent on your league\'s settings) consider this a loose ranking of early returns that could flip wildly in the upcoming week or two.

By Jake Schenkman Just a few thoughts of mine on some goalies this season: I like what Carolina has done as a team the past year but I don't understand the logic in going back to the combo of Ward/Lack this year after what they saw last year. I get bringing Lack back for this year but with Ward becoming a UFA after last year, and seeing where he's been the past few years, how do you sign him at $3.

By Brian Lemenager (@WeakGloveSide) With the season winding down, I thought it'd be appropriate to provide some guidance for keeper leagues on who I think the top goalies are going into next season. I've broken them out into a few categories.

By Brian Lemenager (@WeakGloveSide) Last week, I gave you a group of teams that may look like good matchups for your goalie, but when looking at their shot and chance generation, they may be fairly risky. This week, the plan was to provide a group of teams that, based on their record, are thought of as good teams but present an opportunity for a quality start.

By Brian Lemenager (@WeakGloveSide) The trade Deadline is one of the biggest days in the NHL as it gives teams one last opportunity to bolster their rosters for a playoff push. While this year's deadline was a bit quieter than past years, a number of teams made significant additions to their team that should impact how you view them when choosing matchups for goalies.

By Brian Lemenager (@WeakGloveSide) A few weeks ago I wrote an article about Quality Starts by goalies and argued that some goalies may just be suffering from bad teams in front of them. After looking at home and away save percentages last week I wanted to return to that idea and present a different statistic that measured the topic in a similar manner.

By Brian Lemenager (@WeakGloveSide) In sports, the common thought is teams perform better when playing in their own stadium. Whether it's due to familiarity, the fan support or the comfort of a certain routine I think most can agree it generally holds true.

By Teri Chazau (@terichazau) With the advanced stats community continuing to grow and gain influence, it is important now more than ever to understand how these statistics play off of each other. By Brian Lemenager (@WeakGloveSide) The All-Star game limited the games on the NHL slate this week but I wanted to provide a simple breakdown of the remainder of the season. By Teri Chazau (@terichazau) To supplement last week's team defense article, this week we will look at what teams sport the most dangerous offenses in the league from a daily fantasy standpoint by looking at how many shots they take for each goal they score. The teams at the top should be avoided in matchups as they leave goaltenders little opportunity to compensate for the points lost for goals against.
Jan 28th 2016, 12:02pm EST
By Brian Lemenager (@WeakGloveSide) Last week, @terichazau introduced the idea that when looking at the ratio of shots against per goals against, we can determine the quality of shots a team surrenders. The higher average number of shots to goals, the lower quality of chances.
Jan 25th 2016, 12:56am EST
By Teri Chazau (@terichazau) It seems like every week I find a way to mention how team defense is just as if not more important than goalies themselves when picking netminders for both daily and season long fantasy play. This week, I will rank each team based on a simplification of their team defense.

By Teri Chazau (@Terichazau) When it comes to a goalie in fantasy hockey, the team around him often can be more important than the goaltender himself. By Teri Chazau (@terichazau) In any kind of fantasy matchup, the difference between a win and a loss can come down to a single shot or a single block. With such a small margin for error, it is critical that you take advantage of all the information available to you on any given night.

By Brian Lemenager (@WeakGloveSide) Given @terichazau recent introduction of some advanced statistics used to evaluate both individual players and teams, I figured it best to give some context to those statistics. I'll start with PDO.

By Teri Chazau (@terichazau) After covering the basics of possession numbers in last week's article, it's time to delve deeper into the world of advanced statistics. Too often I see supposed authorities of sports writing stipulating about the implications of certain stats only to recognize that they really don't know what they're talking about.
Dec 30th 2015, 11:01pm EST
By Teri Chazau (@terichazau) With advanced statistics continuing to grow in popularity, they have managed to creep onto the fantasy scene as well. Consequently, I wanted to educate our audience with a little introduction to advanced statistics, also known as possession statistics, so that you may apply them when considering players of any position for your roster.

By Brian Lemenager (@WeakGloveSide) This week I look at how goalies have been playing the past month. We\'re moving into the heart of the NHL season and teams should be settling in to who they are and forming their identity.

By Teri Chazau (@terichazau) It seems crazy to think that mere decades ago the butterfly was not a technique. It took a series of events, beginning with the introduction of the goalie mask and culminating in the likes of Vladislav Tretiak and Patrick Roy, to cement the butterfly as a legitimate style of goaltending.

By Brian Lemenager (@WeakGloveSide) Drafting the best players is important in every fantasy league. However, exploiting matchups allows owners to squeeze the best out of their rosters and maximize success over the course of the season.

By Teri Chazau (@terichazau) It's obvious at this point how the NHL views its profits more goals = more fans = more money. Changes dating back to the 2004-05 lockout have largely entailed an eye for more scoring.

By Brian Lemenager (@WeakGloveSide) 3: Garret Sparks & his pads Sparks posted a shutout in his first career NHL start and did so in style rocking some of the best pads I've seen to date. He stumbled in his second start against Winnipeg surrendering 6 goals but he was able to rebound against the Blues, stopping 27 of 28 shots and winning his second game in three starts.

By Teri Chazau (@terichazau) #1 Michael Neuvirth (PHI) five wins, . 939 save %, 3 shutouts The Flyers have been a slow starting team in recent years but always seem to turn on the jets as the season wears on, soyou can expect some offensive support to Neuvirth's stellar numbers thus far.

Just a few ramblings and notes from around the league: We will start off in Calgary where they are a mess in net. Hiller is gone for at least another few days and Ramo has called up from the dead and started the last two games where he's given up 4 and 5 goals, respectively.

By Jason Banks We are nearing the all-star break, leading into deadline transactions and we are starting to see interesting situations develop. Ryan Miller is trucking along, at an elite pace since late-December.

By Jason Banks Welcome back all to a new year and a time to heat up down the stretch before the trade deadline! We have to start with Semyon Varlamov after his huge 54 save shutout vs Chicago last night. As impressive as he was last season with 41 wins, last season he only compiled a pair of shutouts, while last night\'s blanking was his third in only 21 games.

By Jake Schenkman Here's a few updates on happenings around the league: Brian Elliott will be back in the crease tonight after Brodeur got a shutout last night. Hitchcock hinted that they'll be carrying 3 goalies for now but it seems like Brodeur will be gone sooner rather than later, and I just don't see another team taking him unless they're desperate.

By Jake Schenkman Just some quick notes on some goalie injuries and some possible extra starts. Doesn't seem like Bishop's injury is long term as the coach has said there's a shot he'll be back Tuesday.

By Jason Banks Happy Wednesday all, Shall we start on Pekka Rinne? How has this guy been?! Many were selling due to his hip issues which usually sound like a career killer, but if you were lucky enough to be at the last DobberHockey event, you would have known better and attempted to buy low. Justin Goldman explained the hip issue Rinne had been suffering and discussed how the procedure would actually make him more flexible and stronger in net.

By Jason Banks Happy December everyone, By now we are all into the eighth week of fantasy and it is time to start solving major team problems, there have been several moves in the past few days that could throw Band-Aids on your goaltending problems or create some. Up there with Josh Harding breaking his foot kicking a wall, Corey Crawford hurts his foot stumbling leaving a Rise Against concert.

Hello all, Jason Banks here, Dobber and co. have called me up to help watch over the world of netminding for fantasy poolies.

By Jake Schenkman So Fleury becomes the third youngest goalie to get to 300 wins. I can't see I saw that coming but good for him as this is a big accomplishment and he's having a fantastic year.

By Jake Schenkman Reminder that the Sabres-Rangers game that was scheduled for tonight has been postponed due to the storm in Buffalo. As of now, there has been no make up date announced.
Nov 21st 2014, 1:11am EST
Cam Talbot had 30 saves in a shutout win for the Rangers against Steve Mason and the Flyers. Mason could not be faulted at all in this one and actually kept it close for the most part.
Nov 20th 2014, 9:01am EST
By Jake Schenkman Talk about making your NHL debut in style. Troy Grosenick had a 45 save shutout in his NHL debut against Khudobin and the Hurricanes.
Nov 17th 2014, 12:31am EST
By Jake Schenkman - Rask brought the Bruins back in the win column with 33 saves over the Canes. Ward had a decent game, and while Khudobin will start today, Ward will be right back in next game.

We start off with the Varlamov and the Avs beating Lundqvist and the Rangers. I am kind of surprised with this as I thought the Rangers were turning it around and Lundqvist had his A game going but Varlamov was great in this one and pretty much stole the two points for the Avs.

By Jake Schenkman The Devils were led back in the win column by Schneider last night. After a couple bad games, he made at least four spectacular saves last night with helped them beat the Wild.
Nov 12th 2014, 9:19am EST
By Jake Schenkman Rask and the Bruins scored two late goals on Schneider in the second period to win this one. Schneider admittedly wasn't happy with his performance and there's a chance we see Kinkaid start tonight.

I posted this on Puck Daddy earlier today, but here is a snippet relative to goaltenders. Specifically - the struggling ones Cam Ward, John Gibson, Steve Mason and Semyon Varlamov.

by Justin Goldman It has been a really fun start to the season when it comes to scouting backups and prospects. With 49 goalies appearing in games so far (you could say that's 19 backups), minutes have been really spread out in Week 1.
