Here's the latest on Antti Niemi and Antero Niittymaki:
+ Niemi had a cyst removed (doesn't state where) and is skating, but not facing shots. That's not a good sign if he expects to be ready by the season opener, but there's still a lot of time before October 8.
+ Niittymaki's injury appears way more serious. He's flying to see a specialist and the Sharks will want him to have surgery sooner rather than later. He could miss a few months of action. Niitty has had serious hip issues since his days with the Flyers, so this is a major blow for his fantasy value.
This leaves Thomas Greiss as the major fantasy beneficiary for now. He could be thrust into the starting role until Niemi is acclimated and ready to roll. At the very least, Greiss will be labeled as the backup. He has fantasy value again after playing in Sweden last year.
GP Advice: I never speculate on injury or return timetables, but I will evaluate injuries (high ankle sprains, torn meniscus, hip flexors SUCK). So just know that this is a situation worth watching very closely and that Greiss wins bigtime. Niemi didn't have a good first half last season, so if he's rusty in October again, Greiss' opportunity will rise and I think he's talented enough to post some good numbers.
