Edmonton Oilers' General Manager Steve Tambellini announced today goaltender Nikolai Khabibulin will undergo surgery Thursday in Los Angeles to repair a herniated disc in his back.

Khabibulin's agent, Jay Grossman, said he "will have a 12 week recovery period and then 100% recovery to resume play end of year/next"

In reply to being asked whether or not he would return this season he said "being kept open, but there is strict rehab and again, it would probably be 12 wks. before clearance to play....not super likely
